I love New Years, and I love proposals, so when Byron first reached out I was super excited to help him with his plans to propose to his girlfriend, Sara, while they were in Ottawa to celebrate New Years Eve. Not unlike the last call for a proposal, Byron was looking at the Centennial Flame and Parliament as a backdrop, which of course is covered and surrounded now by a very busy Canada 150 rink on the hill so luckily we discussed a few other more private options, and what we ended up with was perfection.
As always, we check in secretly, I get into the spot and wait, but today was unlike any other... mainly because it was a good -39 degrees in the windchill. Nevermind how chilly I was waiting, because I was covered up, had heat warmers in my boots and was super excited for a challenge, but what about the poor bride-to-be who is going to be taking her gloves off!
Here I am, waiting in this gorgeous light, hoping that they walk the way we chatted about, when a couple walks by and they're wearing the exact same hats as the selfie Byron sent me while they grabbed coffee to warm up for their walk, to "see the sights"
so I'm like, "oh... cool, I'm just photographing a post, nothing to see here...."
False alarm, back to focusing, when about 5 minutes later they actually stop at the spot and I have to do a little rearranging (err... hopping a closed gated door , ducking and running along the terrace that is piled with ice and snow, but I go unnoticed!)
They're so freakin' sweet together. The greatest part for me, was when Sara thanked him for the ring and was so surprised saying she had no idea.
Byron is a master secret keeper, he had bought the ring and contacted me 2 months ago!
Isn't it an absolute stunner?!
I wish them the best of luck in their beautiful life together!
If you're thinking about proposing, definitely call me, having photos of the moment is so important I can't even describe to you how much it can mean.
